The granaries in the Alberner Hafen are visible landmarks at the gates of Vienna. Built between 1939 and 1942 by slave laborers under Nazi rule, grain was to be transported to Germany from the annexed areas of Eastern and South-Eastern Europe via the port.
Vienna originally thought of expanding the port, but this was dropped for several reasons. The area was too small to be able to build an industrial port there; these systems were therefore built on the left bank of the Danube (Lobau oil port). The new Vienna port was designed as a transhipment port from the start.
