The Titisee is an absolute must on your Black Forest tour. The 20 meter deep lake was created in the last ice age about 10,000 years ago. The basin gouged out of the former Feldberg glacier and the end moraine today form the Titisee.
There are many ancient legends around the lake. One says that there is an old sunken city on the bottom of the lake. The townspeople were very rich and lost faith in God and wasted bread. They hollowed out loaves of bread and used the crust as shoes. The punishment for this was inevitable: the gates of heaven opened and a flood flooded over the old city and buried the city under the water. The long-established residents still tell that if you go out on the lake on a quiet Sunday morning, you can see the top of the tower of the old monastery and hear its bells ringing.
