Aonach Beag Summit

Recommended by 4 hikers

It seems odd that the seventh highest mountain in Britain’s name translates to ‘little ridge’, particularly when you consider that it is, in fact, higher than its neighbour Aonach Mor, the ‘big ridge’. Despite this confusion, there’s nothing little about hikes to Aonach Beag. This is a spectacular mountain, one of the finest in the Western Highlands, only topped in stature by nearby Ben Nevis.

A towering giant boasting magnificent views of the Ben

Aonach Beag is a 4,049-foot (1,234 m) Munro in the Scottish Highlands. It is often climbed alongside Aonach Mor. One of Ben Nevis' closest neighbours, it is itself Britain's seventh highest mountain.

I got caught in an unexpected thunderstorm on this Munro and it's categorically one of the scariest moments of my life. There is nowhere more unforgiving than the mountains during a thunderstorm. I've never dropped down from a mountain summit so quickly!
