Kuckum is located in the originally planned mining area of the Garzweiler opencast mine operated by RWE Power. Together with Keyenberg, Berverath, Oberwestrich and Unterwestrich, Kuckum formed the third relocation phase in the Garzweiler II planning area. Since 2016, the five towns have been relocated together to a location north of Erkelenz, directly adjacent to Borschemich (new). The relocation site for Kuckum is called Kuckum (new). The political decision on the continuation of the Garzweiler opencast mine was suspended in March 2021 until the end of 2026. In October 2022, RWE decided not to develop the coal deposits beneath the town.
