The ruins of Hohenstein Castle rise majestically above the Aar Valley – a place steeped in history and atmosphere. First mentioned in the 12th century, it served as a border fortress, court, and administrative seat of the Counts of Nassau for centuries. Later, it fell into ruin – but never forgotten.

After decades of decay, a breath of fresh air is once again blowing through the old walls: The castle has been gradually renovated over the past few years and opened to the public. Cultural events, guided tours, and a planned reopening as a tourist destination are revitalizing the monument.

🚴‍♂️ Cyclists and hikers will find a short detour up there worthwhile – the view of the Aar Valley and the fortified silhouette are magnificent. If you want to experience history, this is the place for you.
