At 299 m below sea level (as of 2018), the Hambach opencast mine is the deepest open spot in Germany: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liste_der_Extrempunkte_Deutschlands#K%C3%BCnstliche_Erzüge_und_VertiefungenFrom the viewing platform you have a great overview of the open pit mine and see the huge excavators. This is impressive even without binoculars, with you can see many more details. The Speedway begins in the other direction, a former long-distance conveyor line for the overburden.

You do not see much from here! Without a telephoto lens you can not take any reasonable pictures from here. Bring binoculars!

Also interesting is the circumnavigation of the open pit with some insights. If you are fit, you can also take the Sophienhöhe with you

Gigantic "environmental destruction". Our grandchildren will perhaps ask us what kind of nonsense their ancestors allowed to exploit the earth in this way for our hunger for energy
