Hilmar von Münchhausen built today's Münchhausen Castle from the former manor in the 16th century. The castle also became known primarily for its collection of plants. In the 18th century it was the largest in Europe. Even at that time, the castle was the focus of excursions and cultural events. It became a hotel from 2002 to 2004.
