The witch trees belong to the Roest estate. According to legend, six women were accused of witchcraft long ago and tied to the six trees with iron chains. You should die of thirst there.
A curse says that the Roest estate would burn down if these trees were felled. Only one storm has cut down a tree so far, the others and the estate are still standing!

The Roest estate and the city of Kappeln have been connected for centuries. Kappeln once belonged to the Ruhmohr family which u. a. had their seat on Gut Roest. The family lived on the estate for almost 300 years. Today the property is privately owned, unfortunately it cannot be visited.
The original castle is mentioned for the first time in 1231.
