In November 2009, Cockermouth was badly flooded when the banks of both the River Derwent and the River Cocker burst, filling the streets, homes and businesses with water and causing devastation. At lunchtime on 19th November, Main Street was dry, only a few hours later it was flooded (as high as 8ft in some places). The sign in the photograph depicts the level of flooding on Main Street.

It is hard to imagine the damage done to the Main Street and surrounding area by the depth of water indicated on this plaque outside the Black Bull Public House.
