The Swedish Column commemorates the crossing of the Rhine by the Swedish king Gustav Adolf and his troops in the 30-year war on December 21, 1631. According to the story, around 1,000 men crossed the Rhine, which was around 300 m wide, on barn doors and thus freed the Oppenheimers from the Spaniards .
