The canal is passable on both sides of the paths in most places. The paths have no inclines and mainly have a surface made of gravel. They are therefore not suitable for inline skating.
You can relax on the canal and still get a lot to see.

The canal is great for cycling and walking. Insights into the Lippe floodplain are also possible. Ships and row boats can be seen here more often. A great local recreation point.

In the meantime, the importance of sports boat tourism and the leisure use of the DHK has increased. Along the Datteln-Hamm canal there is - just like on the other canals in the Ruhr area - a whole series of ports, stopping points and hiking rest areas for sports boat drivers, one of the largest of which is the Marina Rünthe. There are also numerous anglers who spend their free time on the Datteln-Hamm Canal. In summer, many use the canal for swimming.
The DHK can also be fished. The Landesfischereiverband Westfalen und Lippe e.V. is responsible for the management and care of the fish stocks.[4]
The waterway plays a religious role for the Hindus of the nearby Sri Kamadchi Ampal Temple in Hamm. The canal is used by the priests for washing and blessing during the water ceremony at the end of the temple festival.[5]
