In 1950, Dean Heinrich Brey had fourteen numbered Sipo mahogany crosses erected on the border town's ramparts, which were raised in 1368. These represented the fourteen stations of Jesus' suffering and expressed the hope that there would never be war again. That's why he called the way along the crosses the "Way of the Cross of Peace". This has given it a dualistic function. Pastor Aengenheyster later had bronze reliefs attached to the simple wooden crosses. Residents adopted the crosses to be cared for. One of the wooden crosses was replaced in 1995 by a bronze work of art by Bert Gerresheim.
