Maol Chean-dearg is a distinctive domed summit above the ancient Coulin Forest region of the Northwest Highlands. It’s a grand mountain of similar character to the giants of Torridon immediately to the north. From its otherworldly, boulder-strewn summit is a sensational view of Liathach’s south-facing profile.

Approaches to Maol Chean-dearg from Coulags make good use of stalkers’ paths all the way to the base of the mountain. En route, you can even plan a stay at the Coire Fionnaraich bothy, a superbly situated shelter. Otherwise, you’ll find more traditional accommodation in Torridon to the north and Lochcarron to the south.

The normal route goes via the southeastern ridge above the atmospheric Loch Coire an Ruadh-Stac. Above the lochan rises a mighty Corbett, An Ruadh-Stac, which can be added to your day if you’re feeling energetic. Another route to Maol Chean-dearg begins from Annat at the head of Loch Torridon, though approaches from this direction are tough due to the roughness of the terrain.

Tips

  • Maol Chean-dearg (933m), watch you don't twist an ankle over the stone blocks covering the summit of this Munro Mountain in the Scottish Highlands. Enjoy beautiful views across to the Torridon hills.

  • This one is really one you want to save for good weather. That's not just for the views. The way up and down is scree and boulder fields for the last 1.5k. There is lots of quartzite which can be quite slippery in wet conditions. You need to be surefooted to manoeuvre the two steep sections. Besides all of that this is a lovely munro to climb and the views are well worth it.
