Cycling
The gorge has always been a major obstacle on Gotthard Street because it is very narrow and surrounded by high rocks. A mule track through the gorge did not run until the end of the 14th century. The Gotthard Railway Company built the two spiral tunnels Freggio and Prato to overcome the difference in height caused by the Piottino Gorge.
