Peat has been extracted at the edge of the Vinnewzrd since the Middle Ages. Until the 19th century, the 4 meter deep hole was constantly under water. In 1841 the lake was drained and about 100 ha of land was cleared for arable farming and livestock farming. In 1930, the Nv Union Allumetières match factory bought the area and had it planted with Canadian poplars. The province of Walloon Brabant bought the site in 1974 to develop it into a domain for nature-oriented recreation. In 2004 it was decided to shut down the pumps and the area was once again transformed into the largest natural inland lake in Flanders.Source: hiking guide Flanders Route GR 128

The largest natural inland lake in Flanders can be found in the nature reserve and provincial domain Het Vinne, in Zoutleeuw, in the province of Flemish Brabant. Here you can fully experience nature thanks to the hiking trails, club trails, lookout towers and bird shelters and shelters. In this particularly child-friendly nature reserve, with a playground, children can learn about the lake, its inhabitants and the heather-like vegetation while playing. In visitor center Het Vinne you can reserve a GPS device for geocaching, which is also fun for teenagers. And there are also numerous walks and cycling routes with nodes of the Grote Getevallei network.
