Best Hiking Routes to Stone Sea at Plöckenstein

Tips

  • The Steinerne Meer is a block heap that originated in the earlier ice age periods. Night-time frost and sunshine during the day caused the exposed bedrock to expand and be blown open by the pressure. The result is large stone slabs and blocks of stone that are either free in the area or overgrown in the spruce forest. In some places the blocks are stacked up to form impressive rock castles.

  • Good footwear is required and please be careful when it rains - the stones and the path can become very slippery!

  • Crossing the Stone Sea is not recommended for inexperienced hikers. You should be very sure-footed and nothing works without suitable footwear. I also do not consider taking dogs with you to be recommended.
