St. Bernward Church started in 1894 and was consecrated in 1895. It had become necessary because in the second half of the 19th century many new citizens, especially from Catholic areas, moved to Lehrte. The reason was the construction of the railway and the resulting traffic intersection of the Hanover-Berlin and Celle-Hildesheim lines. Because of this good transport connection, more and more new industries settled in Lehrte, which also drew new residents to Lehrte.
