Hiking

The lake, surrounded by a ring dam - in the wide valley of the upper Altmühl, northwest of Gunzenhausen - is ideal for swimming, sailing, surfing and enjoying. During the season, the excursion boat "MS Altmühlsee" connects the leisure centers on the shore. A flat riverside path is available for hikers and cyclists, which opens up the lake in all its beauty.

With the lagoon-like bird island in the northern area, the lake has one of the most important protected areas for migratory birds in Bavaria. Visitors can explore these via an informative educational trail.

Cycling

The functions of Lake Altmühl in Bavaria are diverse:

It serves to regulate water management, as a temporary reservoir for the Danube-Main system, to raise the Altmühl's low water levels, and for flood protection. At the same time, it is an important destination for tourism and recreation, offering activities such as sailing, swimming, and cycling, as well as an important sanctuary for waterfowl, particularly the "Bird Island" in the north of the lake.

The cycle path around the lake is largely separated from pedestrians.

Almost 100% paved.

There are three lake centers with numerous restaurants.
