The cathedral is located in the oldest part of Palma in the middle of the Vegueta. Construction began in 1497 and lasted almost four centuries, which is why the architecture of the three-aisled hall church is a mixture of different architectural styles. The church has a large organ and remarkable ceiling paintings. There is a small museum in the building, and the tower, which can be reached by elevator, offers a beautiful view of the district.

The Cathedral of Santa Ana stands in the middle of the Vegueta, the oldest part of the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The two-towered building is the oldest and largest church on the island and is the episcopal church of the Diocese of the Canary Islands. The most important archive of the Canary Islands belongs to the cathedral.

"Santa Ana" (Saint Anne), patroness of the Cathedral of Las Palmas, is the mother of the Blessed Virgin Mary - not attested in the biblical texts - i.e. the grandmother of Jesus Christ. However, it is mentioned in apocryphal (i.e. not included in the canon of the Bible) writings, for example in the so-called “Protoevangelium of James”. There is no historically reliable information about Anna's life, but there are numerous traditional stories, which are summarized, for example, in the medieval "Legenda Aurea" by the Dominican monk Jacobus de Voragine. Among other things, she is the patron of the St. Anna Church in Düren (North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany), where a piece of her skull is kept as a relic.
In the church calendar, Saint Anna's memorial day - together with her husband Joachim - is on July 26th.
