In southern Germany, Switzerland, and Flanders, the term "Wette" (Wett, Weed, or Flemish Wedde), first documented in the Franconian and shortly thereafter in the Alemannic language area, is known. This word originally referred to a horse watering place. It is derived from *wetten*, meaning 'to drive animals into the watering place,' which in turn is derived from *waten* (thus literally meaning 'to make someone or something wade'). During the time of the Counts of Württemberg, the construction of such fire ponds was made mandatory for municipalities. (Source: Wikipedia)
