Here, a so-called plague column, also known as a martyr's column, commemorates the disease that plagued the village of Schernfeld in earlier years. The year 1614 is inscribed on the column. An information board next to the column provides further details.

Hiking

The martyr's column, also known as the plague column, is located on the Obereichstätter Kirchenweg near the Eichhorn sheep farm. It commemorates the plague in 1484, 1614 and 1649. The images on the column probably date from around 1930. They include "BMV" (Beatae Mariae Virginis - Blessed Virgin Mary), "SS" (Sacra Scriptura - Holy Scripture) and Saints George and John Nepomuk. The saints refer to the fraternities in Schernfeld. The brotherhood of St. George was founded in 1484 and that of Saint John Nepomuk in 1775. The depictions are being repainted by Adelheid Graf based on old images.
