In the 14th century, a main arm of the river broke through to the west of St. James' Church, forcing the old settlement around the church to be abandoned. The constant flooding and shifting of the Isar bed prompted Duke Albrecht I to reestablish or relocate the market town of Plattling to its present location in 1379.
