Pilsdon Pen Summit and Trig Point

Once thought to be the highest point in Dorset, Pilsdon Pen boasts a sumptuous panorama and is adorned by an Iron Age Hillfort. It is owned by the National Trust, who work to provide access to this beautiful spot, while protecting the environment and its history. Dogs are welcome but should be kept on a lead.

At 909 feet (277 m), Pilsdon Pen is now known to be the second loftiest point in Dorset behind nearby Lewesdon Hill, which is around 6 feet (2 m) higher. As with many of Dorset’s high points, both were once home to Neolithic forts. However, Pilsdon Pen’s human history goes back much further, as evidenced by flint tools discovered here that are thought to be around 10,000 years old.

Pilsdon Pen is located towards the western end of the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and there are scattered accommodation options in the surrounding countryside. More can be found in Lyme Regis and Bridport, popular bases for exploring the Jurassic Coast.

The path to the top of Pilsdon Pen is part of the epic Monarch’s Way long-distance trail, a 615-mile (1,006 km) walk that follows the escape route of King Charles II following his defeat at the battle of Worcester in 1651. There are various places to join the Way and there are many permutations for circular routes, perhaps also taking in Lewesdon Hill to the east.

From Pilsdon Pen’s trig point are wide-reaching views that include: the Channel beyond the back of Golden Cap, which is the highest point on the British south coast; the pretty Marshwood Vale; Exmoor and the Quantock Hills to the west; and the Mendips to the north.
