Gate Tower Square with Siegfried's Grave + City Wall - Worms 🚴‍♂️

Here, Worms' history can be experienced in its entirety: Located directly next to the well-preserved remains of the old city wall, the famous Nibelungen Museum is located just behind the Gate Tower Square. At this point, two large archways in the city wall face the Rhine. Also preserved is the so-called "Fischerpförtchen" (Fish Gate), a side entrance to the city wall through which fishermen returned to the city after their catch.

The square itself contains numerous Nibelung treasures, including Siegfried's Grave, a mound flanked by monoliths. About 300 years ago, what is arguably the most impressive monument of Worm's prehistory was lost. This is a tumulus (barrow) approximately 13 meters long, inscribed with "two stones protruding from the earth."

Worm's city fortifications, built to protect the city from Roman times through the Middle Ages and the early modern period, consisted of two rings of walls with approximately 60 towers and eight gates in the inner ring and nine gates in the outer ring. The fortifications were never captured.

Fountains embedded in the square provide refreshment on hot days. Beautiful flower arrangements and shady spots invite you to linger. 🚴‍♂️
