Ueno Zoo is the oldest zoo in Japan and is home to over 2,500 animals and 350 different species. It was founded in 1882. The zoo, which is north of Ueno Park, is divided into two sections, a West and an East Park, each with different animal species. The two areas are connected by a bridge.
To the east you will find Japan's most famous pair, the giant pandas Ri Ri and Shin Shin, and their cub Xiang Xiang. There are also Asian elephants, a large number of bears and larger mammals such as gorillas, tigers and lions in the Ostpark.
In the west area is the petting zoo, which is an absolute must if you have small children who want to get to know the animals up close. The western park also focuses on animals from the African continent: rhinos, hippos, giraffes and zebras and here is also the house for small mammals and the reptile and amphibian house.
