Fitzroy Crossing came into existence for the simple reason that it was a suitable place to cross the huge Fitzroy River. Once a proper bridge, rather than the simple crossing, was built the town's reason for existing largely disappeared. It is now a small settlement on the banks of the Fitzroy River. The primary attractions are the Geikie Gorge, which lies 15 km to the north, and the Tunnel Creek and Windjana Gorge which lie 63 km and 95 km from the town on the road which runs north and connects with the Gibb River Road.
The first bridge across the Fitzroy River was completed in 1935, the current bridge in 1975.
