Ross fountain at Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam / Germany

The Rossbrunnen was built around 1852 based on a sketch by Friedrich Wilhelm IV. Both Ludwig Ferdinand Hesse and Friedrich August Stüler, who have almost identical drawings to the object, come into question as the architects responsible for the execution. The fountain system is closely related to elaborate water features in Sanssouci Park and on the ruins hill. It is a high-quality monument in the UNESCO World Heritage Site and an important nature conservation area at the same time. The aim of the investigation was documentation for the upcoming repair measures.

Potsdam is the capital of the German state of Brandenburg.

The city is known for its magnificent palaces and gardens, including the famous Sanssouci Palace, once the summer residence of Frederick the Great.

Potsdam also has a rich history and was an important location during the Cold War, notable among these being the Glienicke Bridge prisoner exchanges!

The city also offers a wide range of cultural events.

The ruin mountain is a hill between Potsdam-Bornstedt in the west and the Potsdamer Jägervorstadt in the east. To irrigate the fountains in Sanssouci Park to the south, Frederick the Great had a water reservoir built on the hilltop in 1748 and decorated with artificial ruins as antique design elements. In the course of landscape beautification around Potsdam, Friedrich Wilhelm IV commissioned the garden architect Peter Joseph Lenné in 1841 with the horticultural design of the ruin mountain area.
