We went on a guided walk (Walk in the past) and our guide Steve told us that Wotton-under-edge was a town of Saxon origins and was first recorded under King Edmond 1 in 940. It's name is believed to come from the old English Wudetun meaning enclosure near a wood. It burned down during the reign of King John and was rebuilt in 1252.
The surrounding countryside is beautiful and the walk up the hill to the monument was worth it just for the fabulous views. It's a little steep and if you are unsteady on you feet this may not be the walk for you. I would say a fair level of fitness is required to enjoy the walk up the hill!
