The municipal cemetery Pankow III is one of 15 cemeteries in the Pankow district and is close to the border with the Reinickendorf district. In order to make room for the border facilities after the construction of the Berlin Wall, the existing cemetery wall and some of the cemetery buildings were demolished. The “death strip” of the wall ran here partly over a cemetery!

Shortly after the wall was built, an escape tunnel was dug towards the cemetery at the Schönholz S-Bahn station from the west, which ended in one of the graves. According to the current state of knowledge, the "Pankower Friedhofstunnel" was the first of around 70 escape tunnels that were estimated to have been built under the Berlin Wall. E.g. the case of Waltraud N., who was separated from her husband by the wall just a few days after the wedding. In December 1961, she was ordered to a particular grave to carry a bouquet of flowers to look like a normal cemetery visitor. Once there, she heard a voice from the grave, asking: "Jump!" She jumped into the grave and reached the west safely through the tunnel. About 100 people are said to have escaped to the west through the Pankow cemetery tunnel, whole groups of people disguised as mourners suddenly disappeared underground. Eventually the border guards discovered the tunnel and waited for those who wanted to use it. They caught two young women who were sentenced to high prison terms.

Address: The location of the escape tunnel was approximately Schützenstraße and Am Bürgerpark.

In 1903, the municipality of Pankow acquired forest-fiscal land in the Schönholzer Heide to create another municipal cemetery, today's Cemetery III.
The cemetery chapel was built by Carl Lubig in 1905. Supplemented by the cemetery administration building (around 1905) and the waiting room for mourners (around 1925).

The first burials took place in 1905. The cemetery area has been continuously expanded over the years. The characteristic enclosure on Bahnhofstrasse (today Am Bürgerpark) was removed as a result of the construction of the Wall after 1961.

This cemetery is one of the largest in the Pankow district.

In this cemetery are the graves of honor of the State of Berlin for
Ernst Busch, Max Lingner, Anton Saefkow, Fritz Cremer, Paul Nipkow, Professor Dr. Johannes Stroux.

In the spring you should definitely enjoy the cherry blossoms.
