Betancuria was founded in 1404 and served as the island's capital from then until 1834. Surrounded by mountains, this picturesque town lies in a valley in the interior of Fuerteventura, along the wonderful FV-30 mountain road. Betancuria was founded in 1404 by the conqueror Jean de Béthencourt, hence its name. Since then it has been the capital and center of government of the island.
However, in 1834 Betancuria was replaced by Antigua, and since 1860 Puerto de Cabras, current Puerto del Rosario, has been the capital of the island.
