The Schadijkse Bossen (525 ha) - sometimes also called Schadijker forests - are located in the municipality of Horst aan de Maas. In the past, there were extensive heathlands here. Farmers let sheep graze there and cut sods. This created bare spots in the heath and the wind got hold of the exposed sand. This blew up into sand dunes. Hence the hilly character in a large part of the forest. At the end of the 19th century, people tackled the sand drifts by afforesting large parts with Scots pines.
