The Forggensee is with its twelve kilometers long and three kilometers wide, the largest lake in the Allgäu and the fifth largest in Bavaria. He is not a natural lake. The Forggensee was first built in the fifties as a reservoir for the Lech, and serves as a head store for the Lech down-stream hydroelectric power plants
