In the past, when many people made pilgrimages to the Wendelinus Chapel, the devil wanted to destroy the chapel. He fetched a large rock from the Rappenloch, but the stone suddenly became soft as butter. Angrily, he sank his claws into it – the marks are said to be visible on the Devil's Stone even today.
According to another version, the devil met a little man on the way who made him rest. When the devil wanted to lift the stone again, he was powerless – the little man was in truth St. Wendelin.
