In 1422 Gripswald was raised to fiefdom and remained in the hands of the electorate until secularization. 28 Romanesque double columns from the ruins of the destroyed cloister of the Premonstratensian monastery of St. Maria and Andreas in Knechtsteden near Dormagen were installed as decoration in the facade of the round tower.
