The Elbe-Weser watershed leads primarily from the Hohen Lieth on the North Sea in a south-easterly direction over the Lüneburg Heath, the Flechtinger ridge to the Hohen Holz. There, the Weser region forms an indentation into the Elbe region with the upper reaches of the Aller and the line swivels northward across the Lappwald forest to Elm and Asse. From there it runs mainly south over the Großer Fallstein, the Harz, the Ohm Mountains, the Eichsfeld, the Hainich, the Fahner Höhe and the Thuringian Forest to the Thuringian Slate Mountains.

Curiosity: The raft trench in Georgenthal overcomes the Elbe-Weser watershed.
