The Monte Brè funicular was opened in 1908 and was already designed as a link between the city and the mountain to offer Lugano residents a summer quarter where they could enjoy the cool, beautiful walks and wonderful views during the hottest season. The funicular connects the city center of Lugano to the summit of Monte Brè in just over 10 minutes, overcoming 629 meters of altitude over a total of 1,599 meters.

    Hiking

We only did the first section, from top to bottom. It cost 2 francs for an adult. But it's a beautiful experience and you can see the lake glistening in the sun.

After the first section you have to cross the road and continue up to Monte Brè.

It's always best to check the official website for the most current schedule. Ticket prices vary depending on whether you purchase a one-way or return journey, and if you're traveling to Suvigliana or the summit. Discounts may be available for children, seniors, and holders of certain travel passes. A short ride on the first section, for example, can cost around 2 Swiss Francs.

How long does the Funicolare Monte Brè ride take, and what is the journey like?

The entire journey from the lower station in Cassarate to the summit of Monte Brè takes just over 10 minutes. The funicular operates in two distinct sections. The first, shorter segment connects Cassarate to Suvigliana. At Suvigliana, passengers disembark, cross a road, and board the second, longer section which continues to the summit. The ride is known for its winding route and offers increasingly panoramic views as you ascend, reaching a maximum incline of 60.5%.

Are there any easy loop walks or family-friendly trails accessible from the Monte Brè funicular?

Yes, Monte Brè offers several trails suitable for families and those seeking easier walks. While the descent to Gandria is popular, you can also find pleasant loop walks around the summit area or within the charming village of Brè. The village itself has an 'Path of Art' and a traditional communal washing fountain, making for a gentle exploration. At the summit, there's a playground and picnic spots, perfect for families.

Is Monte Brè dog-friendly, and are dogs allowed on the funicular?

Monte Brè is generally dog-friendly, with many trails suitable for walks with your canine companion. Dogs are typically allowed on the Funicolare Monte Brè, though a separate ticket for your dog may be required. It's advisable to keep dogs on a leash, especially around the summit and in populated areas, and to carry water for them, particularly on warmer days.

What are the parking options for visitors arriving by car at Funicolare Monte Brè?

The lower station of the Funicolare Monte Brè is located in Cassarate, a suburb of Lugano.
