This oldest and originally remaining part of Schiltach was always outside the old city walls due to the stench and sewage.
The half-timbered houses were in the 17./18. Century built by tanners who did their craft right on the waterfront.
Red tanners mainly process cattle hides into upper and sole leather.
White tanners use salts, which is how the light coloring of buckskin, sheepskin and goat leather is created.
In Schiltach, leather trousers and gloves were mainly produced.
