Nice view of Cologne and the cathedral.

Bensberg Castle towers majestically on the mountain. It is a beautifully restored complex of buildings that can be seen from afar. 👍

Intended as a representative hunting lodge for his second wife, Elector Johann Wilhelm II commissioned the stately home in 1703 based on the architectural models of Versailles and Winchester Castle. It was admired as early as the 18th century, including by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, who enjoyed the exposed location on the Bensberg mountain terrace with a view of the cathedral city of Cologne and found this place to be unique.

After the Elector died in 1716, his widow and her entourage returned to Italy, leaving part of the building unfinished. Over the centuries it served as a military hospital, cadet house or boarding school, among other things, until it was converted into a grand hotel in 1997.
