Embark on the easy Blue Mesa Trail, a 1.0-mile (1.6 km) loop that takes about 27 minutes to complete, with a gentle elevation gain of 99 feet (30 metres). This route leads you down into unique badland hills, where the terrain is composed of bluish bentonite clay. As you hike, you'll notice vibrant stripes of gray, blue, purple, white, and sometimes green coloring the landscape. The trail winds past ancient petrified wood, some pieces still resembling bark, while others display striking red, yellow, orange, and purple hues. Keep an eye out for the Petrified Log Pedestal, a distinct landmark where you can observe the preserved wood up close.

While the Blue Mesa Trail is rated easy, be aware that the initial descent from the mesa can be steep. The paved sections along the route might be uneven or cracked in places, so watch your footing. The climb back up to the mesa can also feel challenging for some hikers. For the best viewing experience, plan your visit for early morning, as the light enhances the vibrant colors of the hills and formations.

This trail offers a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the distinctive geological formations of Petrified Forest National Park. The badland hills, formed from bentonite clay, provide a striking backdrop for the ancient petrified wood scattered throughout the landscape. You will encounter pieces of wood that have transformed into colorful minerals over millions of years, showcasing a spectrum of hues. The Blue Mesa Trail stands out as a prime example of the park's natural wonders.
