In the 1920s, each of these approximately 800 apartments had its own garden for self-sufficiency and was considered the most progressive settlement of its time.

The garden city of Staaken is a large settlement on the outskirts of Berlin and is located in the Spandau district of Staaken. It was created as a model facility to expand the metropolis of Berlin. The typical apartment building development was to be replaced in favor of largely self-sufficient and less dense settlement units with a cooperative structure.

In 1913 the Ministry of the Interior bought the 35 ha property and had the cooperative founded. It was built between 1914 and 1917 according to the design of the 29-year-old architect Paul Schmitthenner in three clearly distinguishable construction phases. A total of 793 residential units were built during this period. The garden city of Staaken was planned with 1000 apartments and a number of public buildings for 5000 inhabitants. It is the only settlement in Germany that was started before World War I and was almost completely completed during the war years.

Each apartment has a garden, which is intended to create the connection between the working person and nature. The center is located on Heidebergplan with a row of shops where the original architectural ornaments have been partially preserved. Because of the layout of the streets and squares, the wide variety of house types and residential variants, it is considered one of the most important urban planning achievements of the early twentieth century. Compared to other contemporary settlements, the garden city is one of the most progressive of its time.

The garden city of Staaken was registered as a monument in the Berlin Monument Book in 1986.
