The Marienkapelle (St. Mary's Chapel), near Obernau in the Rommel Valley, is a memorial chapel dedicated to the village's sparing from devastation and to the memory of those who died in the war. The site was consecrated in 1945, but it took until 2005 for it to be finally built. The chapel's dedication to the Blessed Virgin Mary stems from the fact that a previous church was dedicated to Mary in 1377.

      Lady Chapel in Rommelstal

The Lady Chapel was built in 2009/2010. The inauguration took place on September 19, 2010. We celebrate the patronage of the chapel on the Nativity of Mary (September 8th).

In the Obernau parish chronicle you can read the following entry under the date August 15, 1945:

"At midday on the Ascension Day, a place in the Rommelstal was ceremoniously inaugurated for the construction of a chapel as a thank you for sparing our village from devastation and in memory of those who died in the war. It will be built by local boys under the direction of Baron vonrechnerberg . God grant that the work may come to pass."

The inauguration was carried out by Pastor Heine and the then Guardian from Weggental Monastery. The project was then put on hold until 2005, although Pastor Kupferschmid, who was responsible for Obernau from 1947, had already dealt with this issue in 1964.

On the occasion of the church's anniversary in 2005, the parish council took up the topic again. Thanks to a large appeal for donations and a lot of personal contributions, the construction of the chapel was realized and the promise of 1945 was kept.

The fact that the chapel is a Lady Chapel has historical reasons. The previous building of today's Peter and Paul Church was a Lady Chapel and was mentioned in a document in 1377. At that time, Obernau still belonged to the parish of St. Petrus in Remmingsheim.
