Legend has it that nineteen maidens were turned into stone as a punishment for dancing on a Sunday, along with their musicians, thus forming the Merry Maidens Stone Circle and the two standing stones.
The collection of stones date back to the late neolithic period and are thought to be complete. The granite stones are around 1.2 metres (3.9ft) high and spaced three to four metres (10-13ft) apart.
