Teotihuacan is a massive Mexican archaeological complex northeast of Mexico City and in my view it is one of the great wonders of the world being a titillating feast for the eyes and full of mystique. A long kilometre long avenue goes down the middle of the site called the the Avenue of the Dead. It links the Temple of Quetzalcoatl, the Pyramid of the Moon and the Pyramid of the Sun, the latter two with panoramic views from their summits. Covering about 20 square kilometres this was once a flourishing pre-Columbian city that housed between 125-200,000 people until their mysterious disappearance in the 7-8th century.

About 50 km northeast of Mexico City is one of the most important ruins in the history of the cultures of Mexico: Teotihuacán. This was the dominant culture as the predecessor of the Aztec Empire. The site later became a place of pilgrimage for the Aztecs. The cave system and ruins dating from 200 B.C. built one by one, cover a huge area, which in its heyday probably consisted of 75 temples and 600 workshops. Between 200,000 and 300,000 inhabitants are said to have once lived here. At that time it is said to have been the largest cultural and spiritual-religious center in Mesoamerica with brisk trade.

The ruins of Teotihuacán were also a sacred site, a burial place for kings. The impressive design principles were picked up by later cultures. The influence of the powerful city-state was found in large parts of Mexico, even as far as Guatemala. From the numerous imposing buildings, extraordinary paintings, decorations and holy places, two stand out in particular: The Temple of the Sun (Pirámide del Sol) and the Temple of the Moon (Pirámide de la Luna). Since the late 1980s, the fascinating complex has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with many other sights in Mexico.

Just an hour by car or bus from the City of Mee, this archaeological site is a must-see. If there are many people, you have to wait in line for a long time to climb the Pyramid of the Sun. Even without going up, the visit is worth it.
