When it was founded around 1815, Neutral-Moresnet had only 256 inhabitants, thanks to its zinc deposits (zinc spar) and the associated zinc mining as well as the new zinc extraction methods discovered by Jean-Jacques Dony and the associated settlement of the Société Anonyme des Mines et Fonderies de Zinc de la Vieille-Montagne already had 2575 inhabitants in 1858, then 4668 shortly before the outbreak of the First World War. Germans, Walloons, Flemish and Dutch settled - until 1847 many young men to avoid military service. Belgium and Prussia then regulated that only originally residents were exempt from the military. During the 19th century, there were numerous negotiations between Prussia and Belgium to lift the provisional.

During the First World War it was occupied by German troops like Belgium, but managed separately by it until the German annexation in late 1915.

In the Versailles Treaty of June 28, 1919, the German Empire recognized the full sovereignty of Belgium over Neutral Moresnet. [7] Neutral-Moresnet came to the Eupen-Malmedy Governorate on January 10, 1920 and changed its name to Kelmis (French: La Calamine). Prussian Moresnet became New Moresnet.

Better known are the eagle stones (boundary stones of the Aachen Empire) and the Burgundy stones (forest property of the Duchy of Limburg) in the Aachen Forest. But if you look closely, you can still find the visually unspectacular landmarks of the former political issue of Neutral Moresnet. From 1816-1919 there was a 3.4 km² large neutral territory between the Kingdom of the United Netherlands (or from 1830 Kingdom of Belgium) in the west and the Kingdom of Prussia (or from 1871 the German Empire) in the east. The partly straight border line runs in a northerly direction to the Vaalser Berg, which was then a four-country point in the time of neutral Moresnet.
