The Church of St. Maria Mater Dolorosa is a Roman Catholic parish church in the Lübben-Senftenberg deanery of the Görlitz diocese. It is located in the town of Finsterwalde in the Elbe-Elster district in Brandenburg. The church building is a registered monument in the list of monuments of the state of Brandenburg.
As a result of industrialization and the start of brown coal mining in Lusatia, there was an increasing influx of Catholic workers into the region from the end of the 19th century. The parish was founded in 1903 and the church was built between 1905 and 1906 according to plans by the local company Hubert & Ullrich.Between 1955 and 1957 the interior of the church building was changed and expanded to the north. From 1988 onwards, the exterior of the church was renovated, and after reunification the interior was renovated in accordance with the requirements of the liturgical reform of the Second Vatican CouncilThe church is a neo-Gothic brick building in a north-south orientation.
The square tower has a square pointed helmet and an arched entrance portal with an outside staircase in front of it. At the height of the bell floor there are large, arched sound arcades in an arched panel. A two-story, round stair tower is built to the west of the tower. The five-axis nave has wide pointed arched windows that were installed when the church was changed in the 1950s. The church previously had panels there in the shape of today's windows with large rose windows and small arched windows underneath. The chancel in the north is closed by a three-eighths closure with pointed arched windows.de.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Maria_Mater_Dolorosa_(Finsterwalde)
