On the eastern edge of the village, the parish church crowns the southern slope of a tuff rock that towers above the village and rises steeply from the valley floor in a monumental and impressive way.
The east-facing nave is a four-bay baroque hall building covered with Gothic cross vaults, the long walls of which are pierced by 4 round-arched closed windows and reinforced with outer buttresses. "The low ribs with a late Gothic cove profile rest like the rectangular belts on wide cornice brackets"

To the east of the choir, which is closed on three sides, leans against the chapel-like sacristy with its curved baroque dome. It has a square floor plan with truncated corners and is vaulted with a barrel and stitch cap, but without ribs.

The massive, four-sided west tower with a large lay gallery ("Ducksaal") closes off a baroque dome on which a lantern leads to the eight-sided base of the pointed pointed helmet.

The building material, palagonite tuff, was quarried in the quarry, which has been in use since Roman times, directly below the building site. The flat-roofed vestibule made of exposed natural stone, which was added to the south side of the tower in 1974, with its modern square shape and large square glass window stands in clear contrast to the formal language of the rest of the church.

The Church of St. Michael is the Roman Catholic parish church of Steffeln. On the tuff rock in the middle of the village of Steffeln, on which a Hochstaden castle has stood since the Middle Ages, a church has been attested since 1501, the nave of which was rebuilt in 1711. Its church tower was rebuilt in 1923 by the architects Peter Marx and Peter Gracher as a massive west tower with a baroque dome. The nave of the church dedicated to the Archangel Michael measures 25 × 9 meters. The interior was renovated and recolored in 1999. Source: Wikipedia

The location of the church and the Michael's patronage suggest a pre-Christian place of worship on the site of the church (Schug). The church stands on the site of a castle belonging to the Counts of Hochstaden, which became the property of Blankenheim in 1282. (BAT 71, 203, Wackenroder). The wall body and cellar room of the sacristy probably go back to the castle chapel. A church is first mentioned in 1501, but is probably older. The nave, which was already described as dilapidated in 1687, was probably rebuilt in 1711, while the church tower of the previous building (1556?) was preserved (Becker). This has been replaced since 1923 by the mighty west tower (Schug), built according to a design by the architects Peter Marx and Peter Gracher (Trier). Builder: Marx, Peter (architect) Trier [1871-1958]; Gracher, Peter (Trier)
        Time:1501
        Era:Renaissance
