Dam Square is without doubt the most famous and most popular square in the city. Here Rokin, Damrak and Kalverstraat converge. The dam was built in the late 13th century to protect the city from flooding. From the square you can see historic buildings such as the Royal Palace, the Nieuwe Kerk and the Bijenkorf, the wax museum Madame Tussauds and the National Monument.

It is also teeming with street artists of all kinds. You can linger and watch very well, but expect to be pointed very clearly to the donation box (hat, box, etc.).

Dam Square is the vibrant center of Amsterdam. In contrast to the past, Dam Square is now a peaceful place with numerous pigeons and street performers. Damplatz looks back on an eventful history. Around 1270 a dam was built in the Amstel river at this point. Dam Square was once the central market square of Amsterdam, where literally everything was sold.holland.com/de/tourist/reiselösungen/amsterdam/damplatz.htm

Traditionally the heart of Amsterdam: here it is teeming with tourists who visit the Royal Palace, the (controversial) National Monument, the Nieuwe Kerk, the impressive hotels and shops. But watch out for your bags, the Dam Square is also very popular with thieves. This lively sight shines particularly beautifully in December when the Christmas market is over.
