Dam Square is without doubt the most famous and most popular square in the city. Here Rokin, Damrak and Kalverstraat converge. The dam was built in the late 13th century to protect the city from flooding. From the square you can see historic buildings such as the Royal Palace, the Nieuwe Kerk and the Bijenkorf, the wax museum Madame Tussauds and the National Monument.

Dam Square is the vibrant center of Amsterdam. In contrast to the past, the Dam is now a peaceful square where numerous pigeons and street artists cavort. Dam Square looks back on an eventful history. Around 1270 a dam was built into the Amstel River at this point. Dam Square was once the central market square of Amsterdam, where literally everything was sold.
