Nijenhuis Castle used to be a manor, a fortified castle. Het Nijenhuis was first mentioned around 1380. The different parts of the impressive structure date from different times. For example, the country house, which forms the core of the castle, dates from 1662, the towers at the front from 1791-1794 and the wings at the rear from 1914-1915.

The description is about the castle Nijenhuis in Heino, it is not correct for this manor in Diepenheim. Here the link to the Nijenhuis in Diepenheim. nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nijenhuis_(Diepenheim)

The Nijenhuis is a castle and estate near Diepenheim in the Dutch municipality of Hof van Twente. It used to be a mansion.

        Story:

The Nijenhuis is first mentioned around 1380 in a vassal list of the Bishop of Utrecht. Leenman at the time was Arend Sticke. In the middle of the 15th century it passed through inheritance to the Van Beckum family. Well-known owners were Johan van Beckum and his wife Ursula van Werdum, who, like Johan's sister Maria van Beckum, was burned alive in Delden in 1544 as an Anabaptist for heresy. Johan van Beckum married again, but handed the Nijenhuis over to his sister Adriana and her husband Gerrit Swaefken. Swane Swaefken, daughter of Gerrit, married Roelof van Hövell. After the last Van Hövell died in 1788, the estate passed to ACJ van Westerholt in 1791 to Mr. Willem Cornelis Boers.

        Schimmelpenninck Family Manufacture

Boers sold the Nijenhuis in 1799 to Gerrit Schimmelpenninck, who bought it for his son Rutger Jan Schimmelpenninck (1761 - 1825).

From 1805 to 1806 he was grand pensioner of the Batavian Republic. Since then, the Nijenhuis has remained in the Schimmelpennincks' possession. Other well-known members of the family are Gerrit Schimmelpenninck (1794 - 1863), Rutger Jan Schimmelpenninck van Nijenhuis (1821 - 1893) and Sander Schimmelpenninck (1984).

        Building:

The core of the Nijenhuis consists of a Dutch classicist country house from around 1662, designed by Philips Vingboons. In 1791 - 1794 it was modernized a little by the city architect of Kampen, Abraham Martinus Sorg. In 1858 two polygonal towers were added to the front and in 1914/1915 two rectangular wings were added to the rear. The country estate is still largely intact with construction houses, a workshop, a vegetable garden with an orangery, a park with a tea house and an ice cellar.

        Landscape:

The winery is located in a typical Twente small landscape around the Diepenheimse Molenbeek. In the early 19th century, this stream served as a guideline to create a hiking forest with winding paths and rustic vistas. The Nijenhuis is managed as a whole with the Westerflier winery, which is on the other side of Diepenheim.
