The station was opened on November 15, 1842 by the Berlin-Stettiner Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (BStE) with the route from Berlin. The extension to Stettin went into operation on August 15, 1843. In the following years, the station developed into an important junction with the opening of routes to Stralsund (1863), Schwedt (1873) and Bad Freienwalde (Oder) (1877). Since high passenger numbers were to be expected as a result, the rather smaller reception building was replaced by a larger one in 1861. Two years later, a passenger tunnel to the platforms was built.
