Schkopau Castle was first mentioned as “Scapowe Castle” as early as the 10th century. A fortification was built to protect the surrounding villages, estates and monasteries. The defensive wall of the inner castle, which is still preserved today, dates from that time with the central and imposing 24 meter high keep. From the top of the tower you have a wonderful view of the surrounding region and the river Saale. In the west you can also see the large chemical park Schkopau (formerly Buna-Werke) and the power plant.Source: visit-altenburg.com/schloss-schkopau

Very nice building. A stroll through the alleys in the immediate vicinity is also worthwhile.
